I would like to know how many of you have your own business versus how many work under someone else’s establishment. What are the details or requirements that protect you as a practitioner, such as insurance, etc…what do you feel your set-up cost has been to practice in general?
I am Reiki I and obtaining Reiki II in a couple of weeks. I would love to hear thoughts from practitioners that do this for a living and any guidance you’d like to share to someone starting out.

First advice, don’t quit your day job right away. It is possible to make your living with a Reiki practice but very difficult. So far, I do not personally know anyone who makes their entire livelihood this way. It is possible and there are people who do but it is not super easy.
Massage schools teach massage therapists that it takes about two years of hard work to be able to squeak out a living at a private practice and about four to be steady and comfortable.
The trouble with Reiki, is that the average person does not even know what it is let alone why they need it. This makes it harder to grow your practice, the challenge becomes finding the specific people in you area who are aware and open and reaching them, enough of them to sustain you.
Getting an office in a healing center will also help drive some people your way. Reiki is largely unregulated but a minister credential or a massage license is a good idea.
Your set up cost will vary depending if you will practice in your home or in a professional office. Will you have your own office or share with other practitioners? Will you share space with someone who already owns a massage table of will you buy your own?
If you buy a massage table you could buy new or used, basic or deluxe this can range anywhere from $150 to $1,500 depending on what you choose. Even though Reiki clients do not get naked, you will still want to provide a clean sheet for each one, so you will need plenty of sheets.
It is nice to provide music and candles, you will need to factor that into your cost.
There is the cost of advertising, do you want to be totally grass roots and make your own brochures and business cards on the computer? Will you advertise in the Yellow pages, your local health magazine, a web site?
Do you want to carry insurance? There is a cost for that. I personally do not have insurance as I do not make medical claims or offer medical advice or manipulate the doby in any way that can cause harm.
All of that said. I have had a Reiki practice for about 5 years. I do this in addition to my full time job. I love it, and I do it because I love it. I always earn enough to break even and sometimes I earn some extra money that helps supplement my income. I do love the work though, it brings such balance to my life and my clients love my work and I am so happy to help them and to spend time in that beautiful energy myself. What better way to earn an income that to be paid for offering loving service that helps people and that I love to do. I personally have not been able to quit my day job but that would not stop me from having a practice, nor would it stop me from encouraging someone else to try. I would just start out part time and gradually scale back on other work until you can sustain yourself on your practice alone.

I’m getting frustrated because I can’t find it! I want to learn reiki at home, by myself for free! Does anyone know a site they can direct me to?
There are several Reiki books you can buy. I don’t know of any Free Reiki instruction on the net. Reiki is best learned by a Master, and you cannot get the 1st Attunement by yourself, it Must be given to you by a Master, it is the way Reiki works.
"The Magic of Reiki" by Christopher Penczak is a very good book with all sorts of instructions and also hand positions and the various symbols, but he even admits that you need to be given the First Attunement so that you can be assured the power you are using is not going to come back on you.

Sorry don’t mean to be disagreeable but Reiki is actually NOT the art of healing a person through their aura.
You can cleanse an aura through meditation and things like the EMF Balancing Technique.
Reiki is basically hands on healing.
Other names that are sometimes used to describe hands-on healing are things like spiritual healing and faith healing.

This question was answered last week, so do a search on Yahoo for more answers.
I found reiki treatments to be a very helpful natural healing method to use when I was suffering from grief. They were not expensive, about $40.00 for a two hour session.
Given that it costs $70.00 to see my doctor for 15 mins plus the expense of medication on top of that, I would say it was $40 well spent.
