Most of us are aware that reiki is an alternative health care technique that originated in the far East. Before we proceed towards finding out what is a reiki massage, let’s find out a little more about the whole concept of reiki and how it works as an alternative healing therapy. The concept of reiki as a method of spiritual healing was developed by Mikao Usui, a Japanese follower of Buddhism, in the year 1922. In this method of complementary healing, the therapist releases life energy from his palms to be transferred to the ailing body parts of the patient. The most peculiar aspect of reiki healing therapy is that there is no physical contact between the practitioner’s palms and the patient’s body. Reiki healing and reiki massage are based upon the underlying principle of channeling of life force, known as ki in terms of traditional oriental medicine, from the healer to the patient to treat physical ailments and release blocked energy in the latter’s body.
What is a Reiki Massage Therapy?
As discussed above, the basic principles of reiki energy healing therapy are based upon transfer of life energy without physical contact. Now, you must be wondering how can massage be possible without physical contact? Well, conventional reiki massage definition states that reiki massage is a combination of reiki healing therapy with traditional massage techniques. What a reiki massage expert does is, he identifies the pressure points and chakras in the body, diagnoses the ailing point or chakra and transfers life energy to that particular point to relieve the suffering. Reiki practitioners often undergo training in massage therapy so that both healing methods can be combined to impart optimum relief to the patient.
Logic Behind Reiki
The theory behind the reiki healing touch is based upon the belief that there exists a cosmic energy that reverberates through every aspect of creation. Gassh? which signifies meditating with both palms held together in a devotional position.
Reiji-h? which signifies the step wherein the cosmic energy is requested to enter and flow through the body of the practitioner thrice, entering by any of the chakras or the palms of the practitioner’s hands.
Chiry? is the step wherein the practitioner holds his working hand over the crown chakra and relies upon an impulse received therefrom which directs the hand to move along the ailing regions of the client’s body.

How Reiki Massage Works

Thereupon, the practitioner uses either the in-person healing technique or the distance healing technique. Under in-person healing, the practitioner asks the client to lie down and relax upon a flat surface, say, a massage table. The client remains fully dressed during the session and the practitioner heals the client by transferring energy to different parts of the client’s body by gently touching those parts of the client’s body, without making contact with the client’s skin.
Under the distance healing method, the healer transfers life force to the client from a distance, without making any physical contact with the client. In both cases, the client is asked to relax and aromatherapy candles and soothing incense may be burned to impart a calm and sedate environment to the therapy session. All she has to do is open a business and call herself a “personal life coach.” Coaching is not a regulated field, so anyone can call themselves a coach and charge whatever they want.
