Depending upon your location you should be able to find a 3rd Level Reiki Master that either gives classes and provide you personal instruction. If you have had reiki performed – that person is a good person to ask. Over a couple of weekends you can get to level 2. So I encourage you to find out more.
The web site gives instruction on line – but you should still see a Reiki master for the personal touch none the less. For the moment forget about the symbols. Good luck.

Wikipedia is a reasonable source of general information for Reiki.
As far as practise of Reiki goes, it is an ancient feature built into all animals, including human beings.
Our body and mind is very capable of healing itself to a great extent. Obviously, if tangible results are not seen, then one resorts to conventional medicine.
Our body handles day to day physical and mental stress constantly, so all damages can be restored. However, major distractions like our lifestyles, and day to day shocks can put our recovery software off its course.
People with Reiki abilities simply awaken the recovery system of the patient to fix itself.
Despite all the hypes, practises, and "nomenclatures", Reiki is no more than some form of meditation.
To heal yourself, or others, you must let your mind enter a relaxed state (namely alpha brain wave). This can be simply achieved and practised by sitting comfortable, closing your eyes, breathing slowly and trying to feel or hear your heart beats – for even 5 minutes to begin.
When you have tried this and got positive results, then you emanate it. As the result others awaken their own healing software as well. You can go around, giving it weired names and make funny moves to make it look expensive. Essentially, if a person has healing power, just the proximity transfers the vibes, if the recipient is perceptive !
