If you use it to coerce the person into paying for your services later, I guess it’s unethical. From an energetic practicitioner standpoint, while Reiki isn’t the greatest technique, it’s one where you can’t harm the patient (but it can mess up the reiki person). If you want to be a healer and heal people, go right ahead. Doing stuff like this is at the very least a great way to make friends. I went to a (free) event like burning man, where lots of people put on free things to help/entertain other people, and there were some reiki people giving free reike sessions. It worked well, helped some people, and everyone was happy. My only experience was in the woods with some hippies, so I have no idea if that would correlate to you.

So otherwise, the anti alternative medicine people have drawn some interesting positions here.

Mikao Usui’s Reiki method spread widely. Correspondence courses over the Internet even offer distance training. To achieve a complete education in the "Usui method of Reiki Healing," three courses are necessary: the 1st degree course, the 2nd degree course, and the master course. The specific content of each of these courses varies widely from one teacher to another, depending on personal philosophies. A typical set of courses is something like the following:

First Degree Reiki courses teach the basic theories of how to work with Reiki energy. The channel through which Reiki energy passes to the practitioner is said to be widened through an initiation by the teacher, permitting the Reiki energy be strong enough to effect healing. Students learn hand placement positions on the recipient’s body that are thought to be most conducive to the healing process.

In the Second Degree Reiki course, a symbol for mental healing is taught, enabling students to purportedly treat even deeply ingrained problems like fears, depression, addictions, and the like. Students are instructed on how to direct Reiki energy to a certain point in time, to a specific person or place, or a specific issue. The issue can be something like an individual’s particular health problem, or it can be a more abstract or general issue such as world peace. Practitioners say that this is possible using three symbols taught at the second initiation. The claim is that this skill allows the Reiki channel to be opened even wider.

As part of the master course, usually the Third Degree, students become a Reiki "master" through the third initiation; they learn how to initiate students and have the option of teaching Reiki courses themselves. The student learns a further "master" level symbol in this course as well as the method of attuning others. In some cases the third level is broken into smaller stages of attunements from the teacher; the attunements for the first, second, and third level may also be administered in stages. A teacher has completed practical training when told that he or she has the ability to attune others to all degrees and has been given the final fourth Reiki Master symbol that is used in attunements.

Natural Healing

Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Dr Mikao Usui (d. 1926). Fired by a burning question, Dr Usui was inspired to develop this healing system from ancient teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. He spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.

There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed.

A Reiki Treatment

The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is a very simple process. The recipient simply lies on a couch and relaxes. If they are unable to lie down the treatment can be given in a sitting position, the main thing is for the recipient to be as comfortable as possible. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. The whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms. A full treatment usually takes 1 to 1½ hours with each position held for several minutes.

Which conditions can Reiki help?

It is possible to heal at any level of being: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Acute injuries can be helped to heal very quickly but more chronic illness takes longer. In some cases such as terminal illness, there is not enough time for the progress of the disease to be reversed. However, in such cases there is usually great benefit and enhancement of the quality of life giving a sense of peace and acceptance during the time remaining.

Reiki healing can be given anywhere at any time as no special equipment is needed. The practitioner is a channel which the energy is drawn through by the need or imbalance in the recipient. Neither person has to use any effort of will or concentration during this process.

As running water smoothes the jagged edges of a rock until it is small enough to roll away, Reiki flows to the areas of need, soothing pain and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Reiki restores balance in one’s life.

Reiki supports all forms of treatment both orthodox and complementary.

As we have all felt, there are times when our daily lives can seem like one giant, mass of despair and confusion. A mixture of the struggling economy, greed, and war, with people just being downright rude to each other for no good reason, the negativity can take its toll. Sometimes, we can all get the urge to simply fly away to our very own private get-away island, to escape away from it all.

Since this is not always possible, it’s good to know that there is another way to find the inner peace we are all so desperately seeking. By practicing the Japanese spiritual practice known as Reiki, you achieve physical, emotional, and spiritual peace.

Reiki is known to have originated around 1922 with Mikao Usui on the Japanese mountain called Kurama. After three weeks of fasting and meditation, Usui claimed to have received the ability healing without energy depletion. Usui then moved to Tokyo where he then created what became known as the 5 Reiki Principles, which include: do not be angry, do not worry, be grateful, work with integrity, and be kind to others. By adhering to these five precepts on a daily basis, according to the Principles, you will invite good fortune into your life as well as medicine to heal all illnesses.

We also know that there are some common ways to practice Reiki, including whole body treatment and localized treatment. Whole body treatment involves having the recipient lie down on a massage table while the practitioner applies hands in various positions for up to 90 minutes, resulting in a feeling of overall contentment and peacefullness. Localized treatments are where hands are placed on a specific area of the body, usually that has experienced some type of trauma or injury. This lasts for about 20 minutes on average, and is helpful in healing the injured area.

A new and popular method of practicing Reiki is to combine this treatment with other Alternative Healing methods. The purpose of each healing method being to bring about tranquility, and soothing the body and mind into a healing space. Providing that state of being which brings about a state of deep calmness and deep spiritual fulfillment can be achieved through a combination of alternative healing practices. Repeated on a daily basis, the combination of meditation and treatment can lead to a happier, healthier life.
